AUSTRALIAN A CLASS CAT WINTER PLANS.
With the sun bidding adieu to the Southern Hemisphere, and relentlessly making its way north to somewhere around the Tropic of Cancer, you would normally expect the Australian A Class fleet to be in some form of catatonic hibernation .
But for 2013, the normal sleepy winter down time will not happen. For this year, it will be the Northern Territory Fleet that will hosting the Australian National Titles.
At latitude 12 degrees south of the equator, the Darwin venue is very much typically tropical. Sailing takes place in the cooler months.
Darwin does not have a summer nor a winter as such. Instead it has two seasons: the very hot and humid “Wet Season”, and the slightly less hot, and less humid “Dry Season”. The wet season is as its name suggests; very wet with a consistent afternoon monsoon deluge, and supersaturated humid air for the rest of the time.
But the dry season, is just that: very dry. The weather is very stable, and it just doesn’t rain. The winds are also predictable, so the Australian Nationals, to be held during the first week in July, have a high probability of being held on schedule. No chance of a cyclone that is a wet season hazard.
There will be a significant migration of A Cat sailors from the southern latitudes, with boats arriving by both trailer and container. To give you some idea of the distances involved, the bottom end of Australia is about 3,700 kilometres distant from Darwin.
The Darwin people are renowned for their hospitality, and this should be a great regatta. It is a little unfortunate that the Nationals will partly overlap the European Titles in Barcelona, as this will dilute the Australian participation in both regattas.
Seven Australians will make the long journey to Barcelona, led by the perennial European attendees, Steve Brewin, Andrew Landenberger, Jack Benson, and Scott Anderson. Stephen Brayshaw from Melbourne is also likely to put in a strong performance.
Despite the cooler weather in Australia at present, the Australian team members are very much in training. Steve Brewin has been out training on his Nikita, against Scott Anderson at Gosford. Both will sail a Nikita in Barcelona. Landy willshortly leave hissheep stations in northern New South Wales to make an early appearance at Lake Garda, and then ontoBarcelona for some practice prior to the event.
The Australians are also on a second, more clandestine mission. We are coming to take the sun back. Europe can have it until June 22, after that time we want it back, and it will commence a slow, but consistent journey back Down Under.
Bob Griffits,
(AUS 950)

Congratulations to Willy who finally got the boat out of the shed and went North for the final championships before the Darwin Nationals in July.

2013 Queensland A Class Catamaran championships March 29-31

Easter Friday at Lake Cootharaba SC was this year’s opening day & venue for the QLD state champs. 22 entrants from Sydney & Grafton to our south and Hervey Bay in the north, rolled up for 3 days of competitive cat racing that only the A-Class can offer.

We managed to get 3 racers in on the Friday afternoon so we had a race up our sleeve in case the next few days caused the PRO problems .

Winds were mostly light to moderate ENE wind with many holes and passing lanes. From race one it was obvious the series would be raced in two ‘fleets’ with Willy, Landy and Brad in a class of their own. This was more interesting as both Brad & Landy were sailing old Flyer platforms (although Landy had installed ‘farm style’ a set of curved Scheurer boards while Brad had bog standard straight boards). Results for day one was a 1, 2 & 3 for all three.

Saturdays forecast looked gloomy and early rain didn’t improve the outlook. Patchy southerly winds from 5-10Knts made for difficult tactical decisions. By race three this ‘brain strain’ must have taken its toll as Willy & Brad finished after 2 laps only and when Landy followed (just in case) the entire fleet followed home thus all of us wearing a DNF ensuring this was our drop.

Sunday forecast on Saturday night was looking dicey with some forecast sites showing westerly winds at 3Knts. Seemed Sunday dawned as per forecast with no wind at scheduled starting time. PRO Lance postponed until midday and we sailed both racers back to back just as a nice NE started to fill in. By last race the lakes favourite wind was a steady 12-15knts. So long as Willy finished in the top three he had the series won but Brad thought he had 2nd place tied up after a third place. Unfortunately for Brad (and QLD) Landy won the last race and on a count back it came down to this win to separate them both.

As for the rest of the fleet Michael Cahill ‘Freck’ sailed his slightly modified Scheurer consistently, finished a well deserved fourth to sneak ahead of Dr Paul who has got his DNA going quick, especially in the light winds.

Congratulations to Willy on his first QLD title, and a new name on the perpetual shield, although he needs another 10 wins to catch up with Brad’s outstanding run of wins.

Other awards presented were:

GGM (65+)- Lou Zylstra

GM (60+) – Doug Chetwynd

M (55+) – Ken Symonds

Most Improved – Alex Duff

Travellers Series – these State Champs were also the culmination of our 2012/13 SE QLD Travellers series.

I am happy to report that although I have passed the ‘baton’ onto Peter Bradbury for the most spectacular capsize( in 6knts after dropping his mainsheet and nearly taking out Lou in the process) he made up by finishing on equal points with myself but won on a count back. Dave Merrett (soon to be a dad) finished third by a point from Lou Zylstra. Once again consistent results and sail as many regattas as possible ensures high placing in this type of series. We are now using the SE QLD shield as the trophy for this series so hopefully continued support next season will ensure more close racing.

Attached are all the results of the State Champs and the travellers series and links to LCSC for all other regatta results.

Also note photos are available from Julie Hartwigs site at:

www.juliehartwigphotography.ifp3.com

Hope to see you all soon as HYC and Wivenhoe regatta’s are coming up locally and of course good luck to those travelling to Darwin for nationals or Barcelona for the European titles.

Regards

Andrew Chaney

Congratulations to Dave Brewer who won the NSW Titles on a count back from Scott Anderson. Only 5 races were sailed (all on Saturday afternoon) after the fleet waited all morning for the wind to come in. This steadily built during the day and thenincreased over the limit Saturday night and continued all day Sunday,

This win for Dave was retribution for the disappointment on losing the Vics last weekend after starting with 3 bullets on the Saturday.
