A Cat Catamarans

The 2008 Queensland State Title regatta was held over the Easter weekend at Lake Cootharaba. Twenty boats registered for the event.

The regatta format was: Friday – two races, Saturday and Sunday – three races.

The winds were generally from the east in the range 15 to 20 knots. Apparently, at the Lake, if the wind is from the north-east or south-east then the wind is relatively steady and provides great sailing. The local feeling with the east wind was it would swing a lot, be gusty, and have areas of holes. This turned out to be the case and made the sailing quite challenging.

But not too challenging for Brad Collett. Brad put a mast and sail on his newly acquired Object platform and proceeded to notch up seven bullets in a row. He might have had an eighth bullet if he had sailed the final race. Lou Zylstra won the eighth race – to his delight. See the results sheet for the overall places.

There was some carnage. Lou Zylstra tore his sail. Russ McDonald and Brian Hooper both broke masts.
John Dowling and Neil Cardwell did a great job making the regatta happen and the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club was, as usual, a very hospitable venue.
