AIADCA National Championships, Hervey Bay, Qld:
29 December 2007 - 4 January 2008
The 2008 Nationals at Hervey Bay are now over. To say it was a difficult regatta is a bit of an understatement. The weather system hovering to the east of Fraser Island determined the pattern of sailing for the whole week. No races were started until 2 January when race 1 got under way. This race was notable for a lengthy squall that blew through the fleet resulting in many withdrawals - some permanently for the rest of the regatta. Nevertheless, despite all the difficulties and concerns whether a series could be achieved, eight races were held.
The National Champion for 2008 is Steve Brewin, who dominated with seven wins and a drop of a sixth place. Steve was fast all over the course and deserves our congratulations. The remaining places, 2nd to 5th, were filled by Dave Brewer, Dave McKenzie, Brad Collett and Bags.
The other champions were:
Youth - Steve Brayshaw
Masters - Peter Bradbury
Grand Masters - Graham Parker
Great Grand Master - Horst Kopp
Steve Lewis won the inaugural handicap prize.
Our thanks go to the Hervey Bay Sailing Club for running our Championship. The fact that we obtained a result is largely due to their sustained efforts to get us on the water.
