Results: 2018 A Class Queensland Championships

Qld takes the record this year for the largest fleet at  a State Championships – 31 boats : 19 foilers, 12 Classic discipline, including 11 New South Welshman.

3 days of lively south easterlies  and occasional rain squalls saw Stevie Brewin add another trophy to his cabinet and  Darren Bundock firmly attached to second spot. Best placed Queenslanders were Matt Homan from Brisbane and Adam Beattie from Cairns with 3rd and 4th, separated by a point and a half.

Adams determination was demonstrated by having to travel via Charters Towers and an extra 300km  to get here. It was just lovely to see these 2 ‘boys’ with their wives and young children enjoying the foreshore at Hervey Bay.

Matt, Adam and my husband Paul (8th) were the only QLDers in the top 10.

Andrew Landenberger showed the floaters are not to be dismissed in 15 -20 knots with an overall 5th and was first of the classic discipline fleet.

Overall the 3 day championship was a great regatta of racing in stronger blustery breezes.  Despite some difficulties for the foilers getting to the racing area with their deep rudders in the low Easter spring tides, there were no significant collisions, no broken masts and no protests. The southern visitors also had opportunity to check out Hervey Bay – the water, the beach , the accommodation and the entertainment options. Hervey Bay Sailing Club also had some learnings  and challenges not which the least of was the complete sinking on the club tractor at bottom of the tide on Good Friday.  It was a “good Friday”  with a local excavator proprietor donating his time and machinery for a successful retrieve and HBSC shed captain Daryl Petersen reviving the red beast overnight for Saturdays racing.

Next regattas will be LCSC All Boats August 25/26,  HBSC multi-hull challenge Sep 29/30, HYC Humpy Bash October 20/21, LCSC Cat challenge Nov 3/4.

See you on the water,
