NOR – Elwood Sailing Club Inc. Winter Season 2015

1. EVENTS
Club races for the winter season will be held from May 2015 to September 2015 inclusive, as set out
in the Sailing Program herewith. The organizing authority is the Elwood Sailing Club Incorporated.

2. RULES
Races will be governed by the rules as defined in the Yachting Australia Racing Rules of Sailing
2013-2016, and by any Yachting Australia Prescriptions, Amendments and Addendums for 2013-2016.

3. ALTERATIONS OF RACING RULES
The racing rules will be modified in accordance with rule 86 as follows.
Rule 44.2 when applied to catamaran classes requires one turn only; rule 49.1 is amended by the
applicable class rules where they permit the use of additional devices; rule 63.1 is amended by NOR
para 6.4. Further alterations of the racing rules may be specified in the Sailing Instructions.

4. ELIGIBILITY
4.1 All off-the-beach boats are eligible to take part in the Elwood Sailing Winter Series provided
that they comply with class rules and have a YV yardstick for the sail and /or crew combination.
4.2 Skippers must be current members of Yachting Australia

5. SCHEDULE OF RACES
Races will be held on Saturdays with two heats back to back from 1200hrs. Target race duration will
be 30-40 minutes per race. A decision to hold races or abandon them for the day in view of
unsuitable weather conditions will be signalled by 1130hrs.

6. ENTRIES
6.1 Entries will be accepted on the day of the race from Members and Visitors.

6.2 Members shall enter by completing the following two requirements for race entry:
1. complete the entry details on the Sign On/Sign Off sheet and
2. on the water, a boat intending to race shall hail the committee vessel and receive
acknowledgement prior to the start sequence of the boat’s first start of the racing session.

6.3 Visitors shall enter by writing their entry particulars on the envelopes provided, enclosing
the racing fee of $5.00 and placing it in the Race Entry box, and comply with NOR para.6.2.

6.4 Failure to enter as described above will result in disqualification without a hearing from that
event. This amends rule 63.1.

6.5 The Elwood Sailing Club Inc. is not responsible for the seaworthiness of a boat whose entry is
accepted or the sufficiency or adequacy of its equipment.

6.6 Members and visitors are required to have minimum of $10M third party insurance cover and by
entering declare that they comply with this condition. The policy may be sighted by a member of the
General Committee.

6.7 The Elwood Sailing Club Inc. reserves the right to refuse an entry.

7. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Sailing Instructions will be available at the club by the first race of the season.

8. RACING AREA
The racing area will be off Elwood beach between Point Ormond and the Brighton breakwater.
Attention is drawn to the no boating zone and speed restriction zones regulated by civil
authorities.

9. COURSES
Courses will be as described in the Sailing Instructions.

10. TWO-TURNS PENALTY
The Two Turns Penalty when applied to catamaran classes will require one turn only. This amends
rule 44.2.

11. SCORING SYSTEM
11.1 The Low Point scoring system of Appendix A of the Racing Rules of Sailing will apply with the
following amendments:

Rule A1. The races scheduled are set out in the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions. Rule
A2. This rule is replaced with the following:
Each boat’s series score shall be the total of her race scores and duty attendance scores,
excluding her worst scores in accordance with paragraph 13.2. The boat with the lowest series score
wins and the others shall be ranked accordingly.

11.2 Four races held and not abandoned will constitute a series. Race discards will be as follows:
Five to eight races held, one discard Nine to twelve races held, two discards
Thirteen or more races held, three discards.

11.3 For all events, a lone boat in her class that comes to the starting area will be eligible to
score points.

11.4 Boat skippers and crews volunteering for duty are requested to report to the Race Control
tower by 1000hr on their duty day and record their attendance in the race log.
For each duty day they will be allocated the average point scores for their best five races of the
series, prior to their discards. This will apply for a maximum of two duty days.

11.5 In the event of the replacement of a boat during the season, the owner may on application to
the Race Committee, be permitted to continue the points scored to that time, provided that the boat
is the same class as the previous boat and at all times complies with the rules as per paragraph 2.

11.6 A boat not sailed by its nominated skipper will be allocated DNC.

11.7 Visitors’ finishing positions are included in the calculation of point scores but visitors are
not eligible to win Elwood Sailing Club trophies.

12. PRIZES
Prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the Race Committee.

13. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
Competitors who participate in Elwood Sailing Club Inc. races do so entirely at their own risk and
responsibility.
Attention is drawn to Fundamental Rule 4 Decision to Race, which states “The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone”.
The Elwood Sailing Club will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with, or prior to, during, or after races.
