Congratulations to Willy who finally got the boat out of the shed and went North for the final championships before the Darwin Nationals in July.
2013 Queensland A Class Catamaran championships March 29-31
Easter Friday at Lake Cootharaba SC was this year’s opening day & venue for the QLD state champs. 22 entrants from Sydney & Grafton to our south and Hervey Bay in the north, rolled up for 3 days of competitive cat racing that only the A-Class can offer.
We managed to get 3 racers in on the Friday afternoon so we had a race up our sleeve in case the next few days caused the PRO problems .
Winds were mostly light to moderate ENE wind with many holes and passing lanes. From race one it was obvious the series would be raced in two ‘fleets’ with Willy, Landy and Brad in a class of their own. This was more interesting as both Brad & Landy were sailing old Flyer platforms (although Landy had installed ‘farm style’ a set of curved Scheurer boards while Brad had bog standard straight boards). Results for day one was a 1, 2 & 3 for all three.
Saturdays forecast looked gloomy and early rain didn’t improve the outlook. Patchy southerly winds from 5-10Knts made for difficult tactical decisions. By race three this ‘brain strain’ must have taken its toll as Willy & Brad finished after 2 laps only and when Landy followed (just in case) the entire fleet followed home thus all of us wearing a DNF ensuring this was our drop.
Sunday forecast on Saturday night was looking dicey with some forecast sites showing westerly winds at 3Knts. Seemed Sunday dawned as per forecast with no wind at scheduled starting time. PRO Lance postponed until midday and we sailed both racers back to back just as a nice NE started to fill in. By last race the lakes favourite wind was a steady 12-15knts. So long as Willy finished in the top three he had the series won but Brad thought he had 2nd place tied up after a third place. Unfortunately for Brad (and QLD) Landy won the last race and on a count back it came down to this win to separate them both.
As for the rest of the fleet Michael Cahill ‘Freck’ sailed his slightly modified Scheurer consistently, finished a well deserved fourth to sneak ahead of Dr Paul who has got his DNA going quick, especially in the light winds.
Congratulations to Willy on his first QLD title, and a new name on the perpetual shield, although he needs another 10 wins to catch up with Brad’s outstanding run of wins.
Other awards presented were:
GGM (65+)- Lou Zylstra
GM (60+) – Doug Chetwynd
M (55+) – Ken Symonds
Most Improved – Alex Duff
Travellers Series – these State Champs were also the culmination of our 2012/13 SE QLD Travellers series.
I am happy to report that although I have passed the ‘baton’ onto Peter Bradbury for the most spectacular capsize( in 6knts after dropping his mainsheet and nearly taking out Lou in the process) he made up by finishing on equal points with myself but won on a count back. Dave Merrett (soon to be a dad) finished third by a point from Lou Zylstra. Once again consistent results and sail as many regattas as possible ensures high placing in this type of series. We are now using the SE QLD shield as the trophy for this series so hopefully continued support next season will ensure more close racing.
Attached are all the results of the State Champs and the travellers series and links to LCSC for all other regatta results.

Hope to see you all soon as HYC and Wivenhoe regatta’s are coming up locally and of course good luck to those travelling to Darwin for nationals or Barcelona for the European titles.
