The Great Race

The A-Class sailing season in NSW kicked off yesterday with The Great Race at Sydney Flying Squadron. Five A-Class sailors joined the Formula 18s, 18 foot skiffs and a lone Moth to find the fastest boat on the harbour.

The winds were light and shifty, generally just enough for staying on the trapeeze, with overcast skys and a constant threat of drizzle.

There was on long race for the day, four laps around a course using Shark Island as a top mark rounding Clark Island partway up the second upwind leg. Although most of the fleet were confused by the unusual shortend course arrangement Steve Brewin managed to finish just behind the leading F18.

The big spinnaker paid off for the 18 Foot skiff, who managed to be the fastest boat this year.
